Step #4: Divide Year Into Periods
Periodization topic can get quite in-depth. The purpose of periodization is to make sure you are in top-form when you need it the most (priority A races). Periodization is ultimately your foundation for the annual training plan. The best way to summarize periodization is by looking at the chart below (this is a direct copy from Friel's Triathlete Training Bible). Here's how Friel walks you through periodization: From your priority A races (mark this as your Race period), count back two weeks. This is your Peak period. From that point, count back four weeks. Those four weeks are your Build 1 period. Count back another four weeks and you have your Build 2 period. Prior to Build is your Base period. For more details, I'd recommend you pick up Friels book.
Make sure you put a Transition period after each priority A race. This is your down-time to recharge.
