Maybury-CPS Race #5 August 26, 2006

Race Time: 1:42:16
Placement: 7/14
YTD Standings: NA

Again, another new trail for me, but I did come down the week before and pre-ride the trail (in the rain).  I also drove down the morning of the race, which is a 2.5 hour drive.  That sucked.

This trail was a lot of switchbacks, nothing to technical.  I knew that I needed to get to the single track as fast as possible because passing would be difficult.  However, not everything goes as planned.

15 minutes before the race starts, my chain breaks.  I put a new chain on but it's skipping REALLY bad.  I don't know how to fix it and I'm out of time.  I could only hold one or two gears, so that made the race extremely difficult.  I was also at this race alone, so never had a chance to refill the water bottle. Not good.

It turned out that my middle chain ring was worn and the chain was skipping.  Simple fix, but not 15 minutes before a race. UGH

I took two SERIOUS falls at Maybury.  Both were a result of front wheel washout.  First fall tore the front of my leg up and it bled like crazy.  The second was a washout in gravel that I thought broke my arm.  I crossed the finish line with blood all over me.  I did finish 7th out of 14, but give me a performing bike and no falls, I think I would have been top three.  I am positive of that.  I needed my gears, I'm not a single speeder.  ;)
