It’s been awhile since I’ve had a race.  I’m use to having a race every other weekend, but my focus has been on tStarting Lineraining for Steelhead 70.6 Ironman. Tri Del Sol was part of my training, with my primary focus on my swimming and running.

The swim went perfect.  This was my first year in the seeded wave (wave #1) so I was a little nervous.  This wave was reserved for fast swimmers so I was worried I’d come out last.  Turns out I came out not to far from the lead, so I was really happy with that.  Swim Exit 2

The bike I’m not really impressed with.  Faster than last year, but not by much.  Biking is already my strength so there is little time that can be gained, but I was still hoping to come in around 45 minutes.  I still came in 6th, buy my heart really wasn’t into the effort like it should have been.  My average power and heart rate show this as well.

Going in to T2 was a little strange because it was nearly empty.  Since I went off in the first wave, everybody was still out on the bike course.  I think I even saw a swimmer coming in, but wasn’t sure how that was possible.

Exit T2Leaving T2 I felt great and the run continued to go really well.  I’m not the fastest Finish Chuterunner so my goal was an 8:30 mile, which should put me at 35 minutes.  Didn’t quite hit my goal, but wasn’t that far from it.  I finished the run with some energy still in the tank.  Last year I about collapsed at the end, but this year I was faster and felt great at the end.  Granted I should leave it all out on the course, which I clearly didn’t do.  There were times during the run I was definitely pushing it, but my overall tempo should have been faster.

All in all, a confidence building race as my first 70.6 Ironman approaches.  The idea of running 13.1 miles after I swim and bike concerns me, but it will get done….some how.
