It’s the time of the year I like to analyze my year-to-date duration and distance (D&D). Given I train for three sports, I like to break it down per sport.
Just like everybody else, I face the challenges of balancing my work life and personal life. When it comes to my work, I have a lot of flexibility and at times very little flexibility. As a college instructor, my teaching changes every semester. Some semesters make it really easy to hit the road/trails after teaching. Other semester, like the previous, make it almost impossible. Also, I work with strict deadlines when it comes to grading and lesson plan prep.
I also really enjoy golf and I am, along with my wife, a member of a local golf club. I love playing golf with my wife, although she can be a real challenge to beat sometimes. The good news is the club is located right by trails so many times I’ll just drive separate and go riding afterwards. Other times, we’ll just grab lunch or dinner at the club.
With that said, my YTD times are up significantly when compared to last year. Granted last year I had Ph.D work to do that I don’t have this year, so I do have more free time. However, I’ve also had strange teaching schedules these past two semesters, which sucked away my free time. Here is how my D&D breaks down per sport.
Bike/Mountain Bike
My YTD D&D is 98.09 hours and 693 miles. During the same time frame last year, I had 21.22 hours and only 250 miles. The majority of my miles (565) have been on my mountain bike, where as last year, the majority of my miles (171) was on my road bike. I did put in more miles on the trainer this year, however some of that data was lost when my Gamin crashed. Regardless, it wasn’t a significant amount of data.
I’m hoping to transition from mountain biking to road biking, however right now it’s just been to windy to ride on the road. My bike has deep dish/disk wheels, which turn my bike into a sailboat in windy conditions. I also despise riding in the wind. Some people treat wind as a resistance workout. I’d rather do hill intervals.
Swim
I’ve spent a LOT of time on my swim. So far this year, I’ve swam 17.47 hours and 38220 yards, or 22 miles. This time last year I had a whopping 1.5 hours and 2931 yards. lol. I was going a a pretty good clip, but slowed down recently to prevent burn-out. Also, to get in a good swim, I like to arrive at the gym around 5am because I won’t really need to share a lane with anyone.
Run
My run is a little bit of a concern. YTD I have 22 hours and 97 miles running. This is higher than last year when I had 6 hours running and 32 miles. What concerns me is that my distance per run is about a mile shorter this year than last. My goal is a 8.5 mile pace for 10k to 15k distance. Right now I’m not close to that.
Strength
My strength hours are actually down, but I think that has to do with me not always logging my strength hours. Thus far I have 24 hours, which is low compared to the 32 hours from last year. My biggest weakness is maintaining consistent core workouts. I really really hate doing core workouts, however if I want to hold the aero position on a tri bike, I need to really need to increase my consistency. Otherwise, I’m going to me miserable during the bike portion of triathlons.
