VERY Sore

As I've mentioned before, I agreed to do two triathlon's with my friend this year.  First one in July and then September.  I've been training in the pool consistently and have reached my goal of 1/2 mile in 15 minutes.  I haven't been able to run at all since the impact of running left me with sore knees.  The Doc recommended I let my knee's heal fully before running.

On Tuesday I decided to pick up running to see how far I can run.  The TRI is 1/2 mile swim, 15 mile bike, and 5 mile run.  Having the first two down, I had to start running.  I started out the morning with a 1/2 mile swim.  I then hit the treadmill.   The first mile was tough as my legs got use to the movement.  At that point I thought I only had one more mile left in my legs.  I hit the two mile mark and still feel good, so I decided to go for three miles.  My friend bows out at the 2.5 mile mark.  At three miles, I am in the zone and I finish out the five mile run.

My knees felt great, my feet did not.  My ankle are so sore; I guess they just are not use to the impact of running.  I could barely walk on them.  My leg muscles are EXTREMELY sore, but I can deal with that.

I still had to get in my MTB training, so I decided to hit the trail later in the day.  The trail I picked had some great climbs in them.  I've never experienced a lactic build up as fast as I did during that ride.  My legs almost seized up on me.

The trail is at a ski hill so after my ride I decided to see if I could actually bike up the ski hill.  It's a long 'blue square' hill.  I figured I could just grind it out.  It is one of the hardest climbs I ever did.  Having a 2x9 set-up, I REALLY missed my granny gear.  During parts of the climb, I was going so slow, I thought I was just going to fall over.  I hit HR zone 5.5, which is max hr.  I held that zone for 3 minutes.  I couldn't breath and was about to give up, but I only had another 100 yards.  At that point it's all mental.  I just stared at my front wheel and talked myself up the hill.  It felt GREAT to make it, especially after the swimming, running and previous trail ride.  However, I am paying the price today.

PS.  I will ride again today....

  1. That seems like a crazy workout on a race week.

Running should REALLY be eased into. It is so high impact. Hope you feel 100% by race day.

    Good luck!

  2. Gup,

Ever though about being a coach? I will be a test dummy for you. I need some structure. How much would you charge to put together a very crude weekly training schedule for me. I don't need specific rides or workouts but just duration and intensity guides. I will let you know what I'm doing and you can make recommendations. We can see what happens over the course of the summer. I am a former pro mtb racing semi pro now. I am 6'2", 185 pounds. My big races this summer include a 12 hour race on a duo team June 21, Firecracker 50 July 4, Galena Grinder July 28, and the Trans Rockies Aug 10-16. These are all longer races but training is limited due to work so training is similar to the more typical 2 hour xc racing with long weekend rides.

I don't think it would take much of your time but I don't mind compensating you for the hassle either. If it turns out to be a drag then you are free to stop at any time. Thanks for your consideration.
