Okay, the visitations and funeral is done. I have a race a week from Sunday. I haven't ridden since 1984 (that's what it feels like). So today, I hopped on the mountain bike and hit the trail. I didn't do any specific exercise, just rode the trail. Enjoyed it.
I did get to test the new GPS/HR monitor. Trying to get past the learning curve to see if I like it. Before I start, I should say I did order the Edge 305 from Geoman Gear. I want to take a look at this device. It's VERY similar to Forerunner, just bigger. Right now I'm leaning towards the Forerunner because it fits on handle bars. But we shall see.
Using the Forerunner, the first thing I didn't care for was how the screen scrolled through data. This is something I set up since I thought it would be cool. No so much. Riding on the road you have more time to look at your computer. On the trail, you have 1 second. I need the information in the same spot everytime so I know exactly what I'm looking at.
Another issue is the actual distance. It came out at 6.8 miles but the trail is 7.4 miles. The second lap also confirmed 6.8 miles. The average speed was also .2 lower than my regular cycle computer. The GPS signal was good, so I'm not sure what the issue is. I do have a theory:
If you have steep hills, GPS looks down on the hill and records a shorter distance than what a rolling wheel records. Now GPS will take in to consideration elevation change, but over a certain distance, small differences can add up. This is why I think mine reported a shorter distance.
Anyways, I will be getting back to training this weekend and will post some intervals I plan on doing.
